Romano: Manchester City eye former Ajax keeper as backup option

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano announced that Manchester City have turned their attention to former Ajax goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, the Argentine international currently tied to Olympique de Marseille until mid‑2027 and reportedly eager to join the English champions as they search for a reliable backup.

Romano's report places Manchester City among the clubs monitoring Rulli. The interest is described as genuine rather than speculative.

If the move materialises, Rulli would become the second‑choice goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Donnarumma, who arrived from Paris Saint‑Germain last summer. Donnarumma remains the club's undisputed first‑team starter.

Rulli himself has expressed a desire to join Manchester City, and Olympique de Marseille have been made aware of the pursuit. The Argentine keeper's openness adds weight to the speculation.

Rulli's contract with the French side runs until the middle of 2027, meaning any transfer would require a substantial agreement. His status as a French‑based player underscores the cross‑border nature of the deal.

During the most recent Ligue 1 campaign, Rulli was the regular starter, taking the place of Dutch goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange. He featured in 29 league matches that season.

At the same time, James Trafford is on the verge of completing a move to Leeds United, leaving Manchester City with a vacancy for a backup keeper. The club therefore needs a reliable option behind Donnarumma.

Donnarumma, who joined Manchester City from Paris Saint‑Germain in the summer, continues to be the first‑choice goalkeeper. His arrival heightened the need for depth in the goalkeeping department.

Rulli originally arrived at Ajax in January 2023 for €8 million from Villarreal, making 32 appearances for the Dutch club. A year and a half later he transferred to Marseille for €4 million.

He was selected for Argentina's squad at the most recent World Cup but did not feature in any minutes on the tournament stage. His international experience remains a valuable asset.
