Robert Lewandowski set to join Chicago Fire on two-year deal

🇪🇸

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has confirmed his departure from Barcelona at the end of the 2025/26 season and is poised to join MLS side Chicago Fire. The two‑year contract, with an optional third year, follows a visit to Chicago last week where he met club executives and coaching staff.

Lewandowski announced in May that he would leave Barcelona after four seasons, during which he contributed to three La Liga titles. His contract expired at the close of the campaign, prompting the veteran forward to explore options outside Europe.

Chicago Fire have identified Lewandowski as the centerpiece of their project, offering a relatively low‑pressure environment. The club’s proposal includes a two‑season deal with a third‑year option, reflecting their ambition to build around the legendary No. 9.

During his Chicago visit, Lewandowski met with executives and the coaching staff to assess the project firsthand. The metropolitan area hosts over 700,000 residents of Polish ancestry, a factor highlighted by the club as enhancing his off‑field comfort.

Lewandowski turned down lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad and Al Hilal, prioritising lifestyle and sporting considerations. While the Chicago proposal remains financially significant, the striker emphasised the appeal of a clear role and status in a new environment.

Barcelona will now focus on a succession plan to replace Lewandowski’s presence in the box, a task the club acknowledges as challenging. The former forward’s exit does not diminish his legacy at the Catalan club, where he was signed to provide goals and authority.

Chicago Fire expect to present Lewandowski officially next week, aiming to position him as a franchise figure and potential future ambassador. The accompanying image of Lewandowski was captured by photographer Aitor Alcalde, with additional coverage by Eric Alonso.
