Riolo warns Genesio of a tough fight for Ligue 1 survival after OM win
Daniel Riolo expressed serious doubts on Sunday after Olympique de Marseille beat Troyes 2-0 to close Ligue 1's sixth round, saying the result offers little reassurance for manager Bruno Genesio. The win ended a run of four straight league defeats, but the pundit warned the victory does not guarantee survival in the top flight.
Match details and early optimism
Amine Harit opened the scoring shortly after the break, restoring confidence to a side that had struggled for goals. In added time, Himad Abdelli converted a penalty to seal the two‑goal margin. The three points lifted Marseille in the table and provided a morale boost after the recent slump. Riolo questioned the performance of the experienced players, stating, "I see hardly anything reassuring in the win at Troyes." Kids outshone the so‑called stalwarts of the team." He highlighted that the senior members failed to meet the club’s ambitions, leaving the burden on younger talents.
Riolo also singled out the lack of responsibility from the established squad, adding, "I do not know how Genesio can get out of this if, in a match like this, the men supposed to be good are not." The commentator praised the freedom shown by youngsters Kelyann Bezahaf and Nouhoum Kamissoko, whose performances were noted after the game.
Genesio, for his part, praised the freedom the youngsters displayed, saying the win allowed the team to break a negative spiral. He acknowledged that the victory is only a first step toward ending the crisis and that the real work lies in restoring confidence and consistency among the senior players.
The pundit’s remarks underline the pressure on Marseille’s hierarchy, as the club aims for a top‑place finish and cannot rely solely on youthful exuberance. While the result halts a losing streak, Riolo insists that the underlying issues remain unresolved.
Looking ahead, Genesio will need to translate this narrow success into a more convincing display, ensuring that the experienced core steps up to support the promising youngsters.
