Rennes hold off Juventus in Turin thanks to Al‑Tamari
Under the lights of the Juventus Stadium in Turin, Stade Rennais shared the points with Juventus (2‑2) on the third matchday of the Europa League, thanks to a goal from Mousa Al‑Tamari in the 14th minute and a penalty from Boulaye Dia before the break.
Franck Haise's men, nicknamed the Bretons, arrived in Turin, Italy, determined to pick up a valuable point. From the first minutes, Juventus set the tempo, but Rennes showed character before succumbing to the Italian pressure in the second half.
The match started with the shock of an early goal. Çelik opened the scoring in the fifth minute, capitalising on a high ball recovery by Juventus that caught the Rennes defence off guard.
Decisive moments for Rennes
Mousa Al‑Tamari, the Jordanian striker, got Rennes back into the game in the 14th minute, following a fine combination initiated by Mahamadou Nagida. His dribble unsettled the Turin defence and allowed the equaliser.
Boulaye Dia doubled the lead just before the break, converting a penalty after a foul in the box. His strike gave Rennes the advantage, who then thought they were controlling the game.
In the first half, goalkeeper Brice Samba made several crucial saves, notably against Federico Gatti and Weston McKennie. Without those interventions, the scenario could have been far less favourable for the Bretons.
Defensive weaknesses
The defence showed its limits from the start. Defender Reynolds handled the ball with his hand in the box in the 65th minute, prompting VAR to award Juventus a penalty. Nick Woltemade converted the spot‑kick, bringing the score level.
Late in the game, Juventus tried to clinch the win, but Jhon Lucumí's goal was ruled out for off‑side after review. No winner tonight, both teams leave with a point, the scoreboard remaining at 2‑2.
