Red Devils add Welsh keeper Kit Margetson to bolster depth

Manchester United have secured 20‑year‑old Welsh goalkeeper Kit Margetson on a free transfer after his contract with Championship side Swansea City expired, completing the Red Devils’ fourth signing of the summer window and adding depth to a thin goalkeeping roster.

United turned to Margetson to address a thin goalkeeping roster after a sluggish start to the summer window. The club sought a young, home‑grown option to bolster competition behind its senior keepers.

Margetson arrived on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract with Championship side Swansea City. United agreed a compensation package with the Swans, meaning no transfer fee is paid while Swansea receive remuneration under training‑compensation rules.

The 20‑year‑old is the son of former England goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson. He progressed through Swansea’s academy from the under‑15 level, gaining a solid foundation before moving into senior football.

Last season he spent time on loan at Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads, making 34 appearances across all competitions and helping the club qualify for the Europa League. He never made a first‑team debut for Swansea.

The signing gives Manchester United a cost‑effective addition to their goalkeeping depth, while Swansea benefit financially from the training‑compensation payment for a player they nurtured from teenager to professional.
