Real Madrid secures Thibaut Courtois' future until 2028
Real Madrid has decided to extend the contract of its Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois until June 30, 2028, according to The Athletic. The 34-year-old veteran, who arrived in 2018, has already played nine matches this season and has won two Champions League titles with the club.
Since his arrival, Courtois has established himself as the first‑choice goalkeeper, relegating the young Andriy Lunin to training. The Belgian, who has put his international career on pause, now devotes all his time to Madrid.
He suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during the 2023‑2024 season, but returned to top form in the following two seasons, playing 43 matches each campaign.
An early extension
The club accelerated negotiations to extend the contract that was set to expire in 2027, signing an agreement until June 30, 2028. This move anticipates Real's rule which, after thirty years, usually renews one year at a time.
Real Madrid seeks to secure Courtois until 2028 after new offer
Arriving from Chelsea in 2018, Courtois has already secured three La Liga titles and two Champions League titles with the Whites. His decisive saves have often thrilled the supporters at the Santiago Bernabéu.
A future already envisaged
The Madrid club is already starting to look for a potential successor, but the goalkeeper's contract remains secured for at least two more seasons. This stability allows the Whites to focus on their European objectives.
At two meters tall, the 34‑year‑old giant still has several years of top‑level football ahead of him, according to The Athletic, which mentions an extension until 2028.
This season, Courtois has already played nine matches in the Real Madrid shirt, delivering solid performances that leave little room for Lunin's competition. His total commitment to Madrid strengthens the sporting director's confidence.
