Real Madrid’s bid for Rodri stalls on City’s replacement demand

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Real Madrid have grown confident that they can secure Manchester City midfielder Rodri this summer, seeing the 30‑year‑old as a key piece to reshape their midfield, but City will only permit his exit if a suitable replacement is identified first, a condition now emerging as the main obstacle.

Rodri is entering the final year of his contract at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. Manchester City have made it clear they will only sanction his departure if a suitable replacement is secured first. This replacement clause has become the central stumbling block in any potential deal.

Direct talks between the clubs have been ongoing for several weeks, according to a source. Interest from Paris Saint‑Germain and Barcelona has further complicated the negotiations, turning the saga into one of the summer’s most persistent transfer stories.

Real Madrid’s attitude has shifted dramatically. Earlier in the window the Spanish club publicly denied any intention to sign the Ballon d’Or holder, but they are now described as ‘optimistic’ about completing the move as the deadline nears.

Rodri is scheduled to undergo back surgery in Madrid on Monday, a medical step that coincides with the accelerating transfer activity at the Bernabéu.

At the same time Real Madrid have confirmed the €135 million signing of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, underscoring the club’s willingness to invest heavily across multiple positions.

The replacement condition aligns with director of football Hugo Viana’s strategy of sequencing business, ensuring no key area is left vacant before reinforcements arrive.

Identifying a Rodri‑calibre midfielder in the second half of the window is a complex logistical task, especially as the pool of viable candidates is extremely limited.

PSG and Barcelona have both approached Manchester City about Rodri’s availability, increasing pressure on Real Madrid, while City remain reluctant to lose the midfielder without a ready alternative. The outcome will depend on whether a replacement can be secured before the window closes.
