RC Lens faces UEFA sanction after smoke bombs in Bruges
RC Lens were beaten 3-0 by Club Brugge in the third matchday of the Champions League, and Lens supporters launched flares from their stand, causing a match interruption and exposing the club to a possible new UEFA sanction.
The Blood and Gold fell heavily on Club Brugge's pitch, losing 3-0 in the third Champions League matchday. The game took place at the Jan Breydelstadion in Belgium, confirming an already bleak evening for RC Lens.
Incidents on the pitch in Bruges
Around the half‑hour mark, several flares were lit and then launched from the stand reserved for Lens supporters. Some projectiles reached the pitch, others the neighboring stands, forcing the referee to temporarily halt the match.
These disturbances come after the club was already fined €15,000 and given a conditional two‑year suspension of the visitors' sector on September 10, following the away match at Slavia Prague.
According to several media outlets, a new disciplinary procedure is expected. If UEFA regards these facts as a repeat offense, the already‑granted suspension could be revoked, exposing RC Lens to a heavier sanction.
Risk of sanctions and upcoming trips
Racing's next European trip is scheduled for Leipzig on November 24. A possible closure of the visitors' sector could deprive Lens fans of part of their support for that match.
The following trip, scheduled for Liverpool on January 27, could also be compromised if UEFA decides to sanction the club. The presence of Lens supporters would then be at risk on that English ground.
On social media, the incidents sparked a sharp division among supporters. Some condemn an irresponsible behaviour that could penalise all fans, while others debate the place of pyrotechnics in the stands.
When questioned after the match by La Voix du Nord, the club declined to make a statement at this stage. UEFA's decision will therefore be decisive in determining whether this already painful evening turns into a real blow for Lens supporters.
