Rangers overturn Slavia Prague deficit in Champions League quest

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball ·

In the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying tie at Broadwood, Rangers recovered from a 1‑0 half‑time deficit to draw 1‑1 with Slavia Prague after extra time (AET), securing a place against Ajax in the third‑round qualifiers. The comeback was sparked by a late equaliser and a decisive extra‑time strike, leaving the Scots hopeful of progressing further.

The first half remained goalless until Belle Briede, crossing from the right, met the ball to give the Czech side the lead at Broadwood. Her finish broke the deadlock for Slavia Prague, putting the visitors ahead in a tightly contested opening period. The goal highlighted the Czech outfit’s early dominance before Rangers found a response.

Rangers equalised in the 81st minute when Katie Wilkinson headed down to Nicola Docherty after a short corner routine. The Scotland defender volleyed the ball into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Rangers players and supporters. The equaliser shifted momentum and set the stage for a dramatic finish.

Wilkinson also provided the decisive pass for the winner, delivering an inch‑perfect ball into the path of Eilidh Austin. Austin composed herself before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper, sealing the comeback for Rangers. Her strike capped the extra‑time period and ensured the side held on for victory.

Leanne Crichton’s side endured the final stages of extra time with ten players after Eva Hendle was sent off for a second bookable offence. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Rangers maintained their lead and secured the win. The result means Rangers will now face Ajax, who beat Brondby 2‑0, in a match scheduled for Saturday at 19:30 BST for a place in the Women’s Champions League third qualifying round.
