PSV’s summer gamble: could a Ziyech‑style trick spark a new signing

🇳🇱 By 4AllFootball ·

PSV’ champions are feeling the pressure after a 0‑4 loss to AZ in the Johan Cruijff Schaal and a poor showing against Villarreal, leaving a clear need for reinforcement. The club’s summer has already been described as difficult, prompting manager Peter Bosz to consider a bold ‘Hakim Ziyech‑truc’’.

The Dutch side is on the verge of completing two signings, with Filip Kostic and Kodai Sano set to arrive in Eindhoven. Both players are expected to add depth as PSV prepares for the new campaign.

Peter Bosz may try to replicate a historic transfer tactic, the so‑called Ziyech‑truc’, that once brought Hakim Ziyech to Ajax. If successful, the move could deliver another top‑level addition for PSV.

PSV’s summer has been described as “moeizame” – a difficult one – with the transfer engine only really turning over this week. Early results have been disappointing, adding urgency to the recruitment drive.

Mike Verweij admitted on the Kick‑Off podcast that “PSV looked very bad in the friendly against Villarreal”. His assessment underscores the defensive frailties the club hopes to address.

He also called the 0‑4 defeat to AZ “embarrassing”, referring specifically to the performance in the Johan Cruijff Schaal. The loss highlighted the need for a stronger back line.

Reflecting on 2016, Verweij recalled how Bosz, then at Ajax, used a similar Ziyech‑truc’ after a match in Rostov, bringing Hakim Ziyech in shortly thereafter. The memory suggests a possible template for PSV’s current ambitions.

Lutsharel Geertruida has emerged as a potential reinforcement, with Verweij noting that “if it is more than twenty million, that is a lot of money”. The defender could be a valuable addition if the price is acceptable.

Verweij added that “PSV prefers to loan rather than buy, which I can understand. He is a potential defender for the Dutch national team, a very good defender and will make PSV defence much stronger”. This hints at a possible loan deal for Geertruida.

An Ajax watcher for De said the move would make sense, stating “if you want to play a lot and Champions League, that is a logical step”. The comment reflects the appeal of PSV’s European ambitions.

Op dit moment, Geertruida remains under contract at RB Leipzig, after a season on loan at Sunderland AFC. PSV will need to negotiate either a purchase or a loan to secure his services. Even PSV” board acknowledges the challenge of meeting the financial and sporting expectations.
