PSG star Kvaratskhelia misses rest of season after cruciate ligament injury

While Paris Saint-Germain is still celebrating last season's Champions League final, the club loses its star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for the rest of the season after a torn cruciate ligament in the quarter‑final against FC Barcelona. The Georgian forward went down on Tuesday evening after a duel with defender Xavi Espart and was immediately substituted.

Kvaratskhelia's injury and consequences

An official statement from Paris Saint-Germain confirmed via the club's website that Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery in the coming days. Medical staff identified a serious knee injury after the Georgian forward was helped to the sidelines.

The Georgian talent was named the best player of the Miljardenbal last year, with ten goals and seven assists in that campaign. That form sharply contrasts with his current statistics.

In the current season, Kvaratskhelia has only one goal and one assist to his name after ten matches. The start of his year is therefore described as difficult.

The absence gives Mika Godts, who arrived from Ajax last summer, a chance on the left wing. Godts sat on the bench for the full ninety minutes against Barça and can now expect more playing time.

PSG must also contend with injuries to Ousmane Dembélé, who has a left thigh injury, and defender Marquinhos, who has suffered a right thigh injury. Both players will remain under medical observation in the coming weeks, after Dembélé went down during the clash with Barça.
