PSG lose Kvaratskhelia, but the statistics show a rarity
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Georgian winger of Paris Saint‑Germain, has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a new blow for the club. According to data from Transfermarkt, this is only the second injury of this type recorded at PSG since the 2021‑2022 season.
Ligament rupture statistics
The previous case involved French defender Lucas Hernandez, injured in 2024 during the first leg of the Champions League semi‑final against Borussia Dortmund. In the same period, LOSC, RC Lens and OGC Nice each recorded four anterior cruciate ligament ruptures, double the total of PSG. Thus, PSG remains less affected than several Ligue 1 clubs over the same period.
At the other end of the tally, Toulouse, Lorient and Brest have recorded no anterior cruciate ligament ruptures since the start of the 2021‑2022 season. These significant gaps may depend on many factors, but they do not allow drawing conclusions about the clubs' medical methods.
Consequences for PSG
Luis Enrique loses a key component of his attacking unit, while the Parisian medical department was already well stocked. After Lucas Hernandez's injury in 2024, the capital's club must again manage a prolonged absence of a key striker.
The statistical paradox does not diminish the seriousness of Kvaratskhelia's injury at all. It simply reminds that PSG had been relatively spared from this type of injury before this new setback.
The data come from Transfermarkt and were relayed by the Twitter account @MeteoFootMaps. They provide useful comparative insight, even if they cannot explain the prevention differences between clubs.
The club will therefore have to organise Kvaratskhelia's lengthy rehabilitation. It will also look to compensate for his absence in the attacking play.
