Pro-Palestinian protests interrupt Nations League in Dublin
In a Nations League match in Dublin, the confrontation between Ireland and Austria was interrupted twice by pro‑Palestinian protests, with supporters throwing tennis balls with Palestinian flags onto the field. The first interruption came around the twentieth minute, when Ireland were already leading 1‑0.
First half and first protest
Ireland started strongly and built a two‑goal lead in the first half. Despite the 2‑0 advantage, the tension remained high, as the supporters were already impatient.
Around the twentieth minute, fans massively threw tennis balls, each bearing a sticker with the Palestinian flag and the text ‘#StopTheGame’. Stewards had to remove the balls from the field, which temporarily halted the match.
Second half, repeated interruptions and final result
Fifteen minutes later a second incident occurred when a supporter with a Palestinian flag stormed the pitch. The stewards intervened, brought the man to the ground and removed him from the playing area.
The match ended in a 2‑2 draw, but the result was eclipsed by the ongoing protests. In the stands and outside the stadium numerous Palestinian flags could still be seen.
Next Sunday the return match against Israel is on the agenda, this time in Serbian Backa Topola and without spectators. The Aviva Stadium in Dublin is already preparing for this charged confrontation, while national team coach Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed that the fixture will go ahead. Sven Van Londersele of Sport reported that the atmosphere remained tense. The first meeting between Ireland and Israel took place last week in Debrecen, Hungary.
Israeli captain said: ‘It is clear that they hate us. We must not hate them either.’ The Israeli Football Association responded briefly with the statement: ‘Football has won.’
Outside the stadium demonstrations were also held, emphasizing the presence of the Palestinian flag.
