Premier League tempted Müller, but Bayern kept him

The former striker Thomas Müller said in the podcast The Late Run how an offer from the Premier League could have almost meant his departure from FC Bayern Munich. Despite a bid of over 100 million euros from Manchester United, he remained loyal to the German record champions.

Career at Bayern and Move to MLS

Alex Goodlett/GettyImages documented that Müller played a total of 756 competitive matches for FC Bayern Munich. He was a forward for the record champions for 25 years, before moving last summer to the MLS to join the Vancouver Whitecaps at the end of his playing career.

The Missed Premier League Offer

In 2015, an offer from Manchester United, led by then‑coach Louis van Gaal, of over 100 million euros was on the table. Müller recalled that he had the idea of moving at the time because his first coach was at United.

"I did have the idea back then of maybe moving, because my first coach Louis van Gaal was at United," Müller said in the podcast. At the same time he emphasized his pleasure that Bayern had rejected the offer.

"It was a great recognition for me that they turned down an offer of over 100 million and said: 'Okay, you're our man'," Müller explained, highlighting the club's appreciation.

FC Bayern deliberately turned down the offer, which Müller interpreted as a sign of trust in the club. He added that he had felt comfortable in Munich and that a move to Manchester would not have been a counter‑decision against Bayern, but rather represented a new challenge.

"In my situation I felt comfortable at Bayern, but the offer was very good," Müller said. "At the same time I saw the chance to work again with my mentor."

After the transfer thoughts, Müller went on to win eight more German championships, a Champions League title and two DFB Cups with Bayern, while Manchester United was on a sporting decline during that period.
