Roy Keane Superb reaction as Taylor Harwood-Bellis scores for England
Roy Keane’s superb reaction to Taylor Harwood‑Bellis’s scoring for England captured the nation’s attention after the Three Lions’ 5‑0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in 2024, with the former Manchester United midfielder joking that his daughter’s engagement to the youngster was “not done and dusted”.

Keane’s cheeky comment on the goal
While appearing on ITV Sport as a pundit, Keane described Harwood‑Bellis’s thumping header as “bittersweet for me”. He quipped, “Not everybody knows that is your future son‑in‑law, do they? It’s not done and dusted yet”. Host Mark Pougatch reminded viewers of their family connection, adding a light‑hearted tone to the broadcast.
Harwood‑Bellis, then 22, entered the match on the 62nd minute, replacing former teammate Kyle Walker. Seventeen minutes later he headed the ball home, marking his first England goal and contributing to the fifth goal of the rout. Four players scored their first England goal in that game, a feat not seen since October 1930 against Northern Ireland. The scoring was celebrated by fans across the stadium.
Harwood‑Bellis’s debut, engagement and wedding
Earlier that summer, Harwood‑Bellis, known as Bellis, swapped Manchester City for Southampton on a permanent deal. At the time of his international debut he was engaged to Keane’s daughter Leah, prompting the midfielder’s wedding joke. The couple have since married, confirming the family link despite the playful banter.
When asked about his debut goal, the defender said, “It is a great day for me and my family. It’s every young kid’s dream to make their debut, and to score the goal is magical.”
Harwood‑Bellis earned his first senior call‑up under interim England boss Lee Carsley after captaining the Under‑21s to European Championship triumph in 2023. Since Thomas Tuchel took over, the 24‑year‑old has not featured for the Three Lions again.
