Possible turn in Ronaldo's case gives Portugal hope

Only a few hours after reports of a provisional suspension, a possible turn of events is emerging in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo: Portugal's association president Pedro Proença spoke on Saturday at the stadium inauguration in Porto with conciliatory words to the superstar, after the 41‑year‑old striker left the national team camp following a Nations League incident.

According to reports, Ronaldo was provisionally suspended by the association after the incident and a disciplinary procedure was launched. “The association, the coach, all teammates are in agreement: Everyone wants Cristiano back. I expect him already during the international break in November,” Proença told journalists.

Provisional Suspension and New Prospects

A final verdict from the disciplinary commission is still missing. “That depends solely on the disciplinary commission, which as an autonomous body will carry out the work,” Proença explained.

The trigger was that Ronaldo left the camp after he was not fielded in Portugal’s 2‑1 victory over Norway in the Nations League. Coach Jorge Jesus then publicly accused the association of breaking its word.

The 41‑year‑old Ronaldo has played 234 international matches for Portugal and scored 146 goals – both record figures. Portugal, defending champion, has won the last four Nations League matches and is already in the quarter‑finals.

Proença emphasized that Ronaldo would be available for the team again after a possible sanction. Thus his future in the national team remains open until the commission decides.
