Portugal: Ronaldo's farewell style splits opinion

The recent departure drama has sparked the discussion about Cristiano Ronaldo's possible end of his career in the Portuguese national team, while Bruno Fernandes emphasizes that Ronaldo deserves a dignified farewell, not the current way of handling it. The manner in which Ronaldo is leaving is being criticised and remains controversial.

Departure Drama and Immediate Consequences

Ronaldo left the squad on Wednesday immediately before the friendly in Denmark, which ended 4-2, and therefore missed the Nations League match. Shortly thereafter, the 2016 European champion announced in an Instagram post that he would reveal the truth about the reasons for his departure from the national team at a later date. He emphasized that he has always devoted himself to the team "with full force".

Fernandes Calls for a Dignified Farewell Celebration

Manchester United midfield star Bruno Fernandes told the portal B24: "If Cris wants to end his career in the national team, he should do it with a big celebration – and not in this way. Because he deserves that and he is also worth it. After all, he is the biggest icon of our football and our country."

The reactions to Ronaldo's departure were intense: His iconic number seven was assigned to Rafael Leão, and his sister Elma Aveiro publicly attacked the national coach. Host Piers Morgan even called the 72‑year‑old coach Jorge Jesus an "arrogant asshole".

Nevertheless, a possible reconciliation is emerging: Portuguese media report that Jesus is ready for a clarifying conversation with the superstar. The newspaper A Bola spoke of a possible "peace summit" and mentioned that the national coach had accepted a mediation attempt initiated by the federation.

Before the return match against Norway on Sunday in Porto, Jesus said cautiously: "It's not about ignoring Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a symbol of the national team and of Portugal. After the game there is still enough time to talk about it."
