Pierre Sage’s Crystal Palace move was never certain until June

🇬🇧
Pierre Sage confirmed he would have stayed at RC Lens if Crystal Palace had failed to reach an agreement over his departure. The former Les Sang et Or head coach made his stance clear to club officials Jean-Louis Leca and Benjamin Parrot during intensified negotiations. Sage told L’Équipe that he had already decided Crystal Palace was the right destination but stressed his commitment to Lens if talks broke down. “When discussions over the transfer compensation really intensified, I said to Jean-Louis Leca and Benjamin Parrot, ‘Listen, if it gets blocked, I’ll stay,’” he explained. The Lens head coach at the time rejected claims he forced the move, insisting he only finalised his choice on 1 June, after the Coupe de France final. He noted that Crystal Palace first contacted him in December, but his decision came months later. Sage also clarified that Lens had given him ten days to decide, yet he communicated his decision nearly a week before the deadline expired. The timing, he said, was driven by the need to resolve uncertainty. Liam Wraith reported the comments from Sage, who left RC Lens for Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
