Patrick Wimmer must miss a long time because of a muscle injury

A photo by Oliver Zimmermann shows the injured Patrick Wimmer, while the word “football” shines in the background – the 25‑year‑old forward of TSG Hoffenheim has suffered a muscle injury in the back of his thigh and is expected to be out until the next international break.

Injury and Absence Time

The club confirmed that Wimmer will miss several weeks because of the back‑thigh injury. According to club statements, he is “expected to be out until the next international break”, meaning he will be unavailable for both Hoffenheim’s attack and the Austrian national team.

A tweet from @Wimmsi reading “Get well soon, Wimmsi! Patrick Wimmer has suffered a muscle injury in the back of his thigh and will likely be out until the next international break.” underscores the fans’ concern.

Impact on the UEFA Nations League

The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) faces crucial matches in the UEFA Nations League against Ireland on 14 November and Israel on 17 November, both fixtures broadcast live on ORF 1. Without Wimmer, the team loses an important winger who has been regularly used in the recent qualifying rounds.

Wimmer was most recently involved when Austria beat Israel 3‑1 and Kosovo 3‑1, and secured draws in the matches against Ireland (2‑2) as well as the return leg against Kosovo (1‑1).

The forward moved last summer from VfL Wolfsburg to TSG Hoffenheim, the club of coach Christian Ilzer. The absence hits the team at a time when, in addition to the German Bundesliga, a tight schedule in the UEFA Europa League is looming, including the home match against Besiktas Istanbul next Thursday.

Wimmer was already missing in Hoffenheim’s 2‑3 loss to HSV, and his place in the squad remains vacant for now. Coach Ilzer must now turn to backup players to fill the attacking gap.

In the fifth round of the German Bundesliga, among others, the following results occurred: Augsburg 2‑2 Bayern (goals: Fellhauer 1’, Ribeiro 64’; Caci 33’, 42’, Hollerbach 90+2), Mainz 1‑2 Union (goals: Chabot 25’, Führich 83’; Andrich 5’, Schick 9’, Quansah 55’, Diaby 65’), Hoffenheim 3‑2 Leipzig (goals: Banzuzi 1’, Nkunku 5’, 41’, 44’, Nusa 54’, Gomis 89’; Seiwald off 58’), and Dortmund 2‑2 Bremen (goals: Sabitzer until 72’, Reis 88’, Füllkrug 90+2). These results show that Hoffenheim, despite the absence of Wimmer, remains in the fight for the top table positions.

The loss of Wimmer presents a tactical challenge for both TSG Hoffenheim and the Austrian national team; the hope remains that he will be fully fit again after the recovery period.
