Ligue 1
Paris Jusqu'où may be tested as Monaco sit top of Ligue after five games
Under the floodlights of Stade Louis II on Saturday evening, AS Monaco host Toulouse at 20:45, hoping to cement their unbeaten run and maintain the narrow margin at the summit of Ligue 1 after five rounds.
Unbeaten start fuels ambition
Monaco have collected six wins and one draw from seven official matches, remaining the only club in the five major European leagues yet to taste defeat. Director general Thiago Scuro reiterated the season’s aim: "Qualify directly for the Champions League" – a target that implies a podium finish and, if possible, more.
Coach Filipe Luis, the Brazilian who arrived from Flamengo, has overseen the best start of any tenure at the club, surpassing the records of Claudio Ranieri, Didier Deschamps, Leonardo Jardim and Arsène Wenger over a comparable span.
Veterans voice cautious optimism
Former striker Valère Germain, a 2017 French champion, praised Luis’s simplicity and humility, adding that his experience should translate into success. Ex‑defender Sébastien Squillaci, initially sceptical, now lauds the tactical discipline, noting greater defensive solidity and more space for attackers than in previous seasons.
Squillaci warned that consistency will be essential at the highest level, saying the team must avoid the lapses that plagued earlier campaigns.
Facing the giants ahead
Monaco’s schedule soon pits them against Olympique de Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain, Strasbourg and Lens – fixtures that will test whether the side can truly “embarrass” Paris. Luis dismissed direct comparison with Paris Saint-Germain, reminding that the latter have won the last two Champions Leagues and are “the best team in the world".
Squillaci echoed the sentiment, suggesting that if Paris push too hard, they could become “out of their league”.
Financial backdrop and squad depth
Transfermarkt values Monaco’s squad at €377 million, second only to Paris Saint-Germain’s €1.36 billion. Despite this, the club generated over €100 million in sales during the summer market.
Captain Denis Zakaria tempered expectations after a 2‑1 win over Lens, stating the squad’s hunger but acknowledging the season is only beginning.
Matthis Abline added that the team will fight “until the end” and aim to progress as far as possible in the upcoming Conference League.
