Smets said his childhood dream was always to progress from youth teams to the first team and play at the Cegeka Arena. He added that KRC Genk feels like a second home where he feels appreciated and understands the club’s regional significance.
He declared his desire to assume responsibility, become the leader of the defence and give everything in every match. His clear ambition is to reach a new career level by winning a trophy, insisting the team must keep working hard each day.
Matte Smets signed for KRC Genk in the summer of 2024, arriving from Saint‑Trond. Since then the 22‑year‑old has imposed himself as a master piece of the side, having progressed through both clubs during his formation as a native of Bilzen.
In a club‑issued tweet, the message reads: “Ik blijf bij blauw 💙KRC Genk en Matte Smets gaan langer met elkaar door.” The post confirms the 22‑year‑old defender has extended his contract at the Cegeka Arena until 2030, with a link for Meer info.
