Official: Cristiano Ronaldo suspended after leaving national camp

In the locker room of the Portuguese camp, the atmosphere was heavy after the 2-1 victory over Norway, when Al‑Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo left the gathering without waiting for the match against Denmark. The departure, described as “shattering”, triggered a preventive suspension, announced as official.

Background of the dispute

On October 7, during the Nations League match where Portugal beat Norway 2-1, manager Jorge Jesus had promised Ronaldo about half an hour of playing time. Ronaldo stayed on the bench, was not called on to resume, and expressed his frustration, feeling that his word was not respected.

After the match, the coach allegedly promised a public explanation at a press conference, but no communication came. Feeling that his expectations were not taken seriously, Ronaldo decided to leave the camp before the next encounter with Denmark.

Federation's reaction and disciplinary procedure

On October 9, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed the opening of a disciplinary procedure and imposed a provisional suspension on Ronaldo, already in effect from his departure from the camp. The commission described the case as “urgent”, noting that the captain issued a lengthy apology statement while demanding a sanction proportionate to his exemplary status.

According to the FPF's disciplinary regulations, the sanction can range from one to six months of ban, possibly accompanied by a fine. Ronaldo, 41 years old, acknowledged that his action would have consequences, but insisted that his role as a model justified a strict sanction.

Jorge Jesus, the manager, said “Cris is the one who decides”, implying that Ronaldo's return will depend on his own decisions. He nevertheless left the door open for a possible reintegration for upcoming call‑ups.

The suspension already weighs heavily on Portugal's schedule and on Al‑Nassr's ambitions in the AFC Champions League Elite, whose next match is scheduled for October 12.
