Oaktree targets a satellite club for Inter by 2027
Oaktree, the US fund that controls Inter, is studying a project to acquire a European satellite club by 2027, with the aim of creating a new development pathway for the young Inter players and, at the same time, enhancing the investment over time.
Sporting objective
The sporting aspect is at the core of the project. After the creation of Inter Under 23, which plays in Serie C, the club is looking for a more structured pathway between the youth sector, the second team and the first team. A satellite club would allow the youngsters to face a higher level of football before returning to Appiano Gentile.
Economic aspects
From a financial point of view, Oaktree has allocated a budget of between €30 and €40 million to identify the right opportunity. Inter would consider a company with an indicative valuation of €25 to €40 million, an amount sufficient to take a stake in a modest‑sized club but with growth prospects.
Market selection
The project mainly looks at countries such as Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands, where the development of young players is traditionally high. Switzerland and, alternatively, the Spanish Segunda División are also considered, preferring clubs already present in the top national division. Among the options under consideration is also Casa Pia, a Portuguese top‑division club. Regulations on the registration of non‑EU players, for example in Spain, make these markets particularly attractive for talent brokerage.
The model fits into an established trend in European football, already adopted by entities such as City Football Group, Red Bull, BlueCo and Jim Ratcliffe’s group, which use satellite clubs for youth development and investment enhancement.
The timetable is still exploratory, but the goal is to complete the acquisition by 2027, so that the new club can already be used in the summer transfer window of the 2027/28 season.
