Niclas Füllkrug shrugs at possible Germany recall as Werder scores

Niclas Füllkrug has once again found the net, netting a double in Werder Bremen’s 3‑2 victory over FSV Mainz 05, yet the prospect of a possible DFB comeback (Mögliches DFB-Comeback) leaves the 33‑year‑old indifferent. He reiterated his focus on club duties, saying he plays for Werder, not for a national team nomination.

Club form and goals

The striker's double (Doppelpack) against FSV Mainz 05 lifted Werder Bremen to a 3‑2 win, his seventh and eighth league goals of the season. The tally also marked his sixth consecutive Bundesliga match with a goal, a feat only matched in Bremen by Rudi Völler in 1982/83. The victory moved Werder into the league’s upper half, reinforcing their early‑season momentum.

Werder have collected twelve points from seven games, the best start in eight years. Trainer Daniel Thioune praised him, saying, “He is our lighthouse – and he shines strongly. He drags this team with him.”

After the away victory Füllkrug celebrated barefoot in front of the fans, his distinctive gap in his teeth on display. A minor spat with Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri was quickly forgotten, as was his frustration at being substituted, which he explained: “Funny enough it wasn’t because of the substitution, it just took me too long. I indicated early that I had to go out…”.

National team speculation

When asked about the topic (Thema) of a possible DFB comeback, the Bremen (Bremer) forward remained unmoved. He stressed that his core competence remains finding the back of the net, adding, “I don’t play for a nomination. I play for Werder.” He then concluded, “Really: It doesn’t interest me at all.”

He also said he cannot comment on a national team return, “I can’t say anything. I don’t know.” Klopp had raised Füllkrug’s age in a recent press conference, noting the striker still scores regularly. The deadline for any decision is 5 November, after which Jürgen Klopp will announce his squad for the Nations League fixtures in Serbia on 13 November and the Netherlands on 16 November. We (Wir) will know more then.

Klopp, who noted Füllkrug’s 33‑year‑old age a few days earlier, replied with a smile, “That’s not my fault. We have a present, a medium‑term future and a long‑term future. In the present it can of course work, medium‑term possibly, long‑term we will see.” Füllkrug echoed that his age has never been a topic in his career.

Werder’s next challenge arrives on Tuesday in the DFB‑Pokal against former club Borussia Dortmund, while in the league he already shocked the same opponents with a stoppage‑time equaliser to earn a 2‑2 draw. The striker insists he will keep his goal streak alive – “for Jürgen Klopp” as he put it.
