Nice's rebuild hinges on courting Metz captain Hein

OGC Nice have entered advanced negotiations to acquire FC Metz captain Gauthier Hein, 29, who returned to Metz from AJ Auxerre two seasons ago, recorded eight goals and seven assists in Ligue 1, but could not stop Metz’s relegation to Ligue 2 last campaign.

Hein rejoined Metz after the club’s relegation and Auxerre’s promotion in the same season, demonstrating his willingness to battle in the French second tier. His move came despite Metz’s drop to Ligue 2 and Auxerre’s ascent to Ligue 1.

During his captaincy, Hein led Les Grenats back to the top flight at the first attempt, guiding the side to promotion. He led Les Grenats to promotion after a single season in Ligue 2.

Despite his personal contributions, Metz slipped back to Ligue 2 last season, leaving Hein open to remain in Ligue 1. The midfielder’s eight goals and seven assists highlighted his offensive contribution despite the team’s overall struggles.

OGC Nice are seeking to rebuild after flirting with relegation themselves last season, appointing Olivier Pantaloni as their new manager. Nice’s recent flirt with relegation underscores the urgency of reinforcing the squad.

The club also anticipates finalising a new sporting director appointment shortly, a move that could facilitate Hein’s arrival as part of the overhaul. The pending sporting director is expected to shape recruitment strategy for the upcoming campaign.

While Nice have not yet submitted a formal offer to Metz, the French forward remains in talks with the Côte d’Azur side. Hein’s potential move would keep him in Ligue 1, aligning with his desire to stay at the highest domestic level.

The report was compiled by Luke Entwistle for GFFN, highlighting the potential transfer’s impact on both clubs. Entwistle’s coverage emphasizes the strategic importance of the transfer for Nice’s rebuilding plans.
