Newcastle United boost attack with Leanne Kiernan signing

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Republic of Ireland forward Leanne Kiernan from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee, adding the 27‑year‑old to their squad as they prepare for another campaign in the Women’s Super League after months of advanced talks.

Kiernan attracted Newcastle because she was Liverpool’s top scorer in the 2021‑22 season that secured the WSL 2 title. Her proven goal‑scoring record offers the Magpies additional firepower as they aim to contend for the WSL 2 crown. The club’s busy transfer window, which already includes seven other signings, underscores their ambition.

During her five‑year spell with the Reds, Kiernan netted 23 goals in 76 appearances. She finished the 2022 campaign with 14 goals, the highest tally for Liverpool that season. She departs as the second‑highest scorer for Liverpool in the WSL era, although injuries have limited her recent output.

The 27‑year‑old spent the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest. She remained under contract with Liverpool, having signed an extension in 2025 that left at least one year on her deal.

Kiernan found regular minutes scarce under Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor, starting only once in the WSL before moving to Forest in January. Her limited involvement prompted the club to explore a transfer.

Before joining Liverpool, Kiernan made more than 40 WSL appearances for West Ham after beginning her senior career at Shelbourne. Internationally, she has earned 38 caps for the Republic of Ireland since her debut in 2017.

Liverpool have reinforced their attack this summer by signing German forward Vivien Endemann from Wolfsburg. Kiernan’s exit frees a roster spot and reflects the club’s shift in attacking options.

For Newcastle, Kiernan’s arrival provides depth and experience ahead of a season in which they hope to challenge for the WSL 2 title.
