Newcastle eye four names as Jaissle could be sacked

Matthias Jaissle’s position as Newcastle United manager looks fragile after yet another defeat in which the side appeared tactically out‑of‑step.

Appointing a man with no Premier League experience raised eyebrows, and after some encouraging early results Newcastle’s blood‑and‑thunder approach has been exposed, with the club winning just one of their last five games.

Speculation is growing that Jaissle could become the first Premier League manager to be dismissed this season, leaving the board to decide who will replace him.

Options appear limited; Eddie Howe is regarded as the best prospect for any Premier League club other than Newcastle, meaning the Magpies will have to look elsewhere.

The club have identified four possible successors.

Potential successors

Didier Deschamps, aside from Pep Guardiola, is the most decorated manager currently out of work; he left the France role in the summer after fourteen years, during which he secured three major trophies and the World Cup.

Deschamps also won Ligue 1 with Marseille in the 2009/10 season, guided Juventus back to Serie A after the Calciopoli scandal, and reached the Champions League final with Monaco in 2004.

The 58‑year‑old is reported to be seeking a return to club management, with Juventus said to be interested, although convincing a World Cup winner to drop into the lower echelons of the Premier League may prove difficult.

Julian Nagelsmann’s reputation has suffered after unsuccessful spells at Bayern and Germany, and the 39‑year‑old could look to rebuild away from the elite, with Newcastle a possible destination.

Nagelsmann is known for tactical flexibility, primarily using a 4‑2‑3‑1 at Bayern and championing a high‑pressing style that, while ineffective with Germany due to a lacklustre talent pool, might thrive at Newcastle.

Kieran McKenna walked away from Ipswich rather than being sacked; his work there has made him one of England’s highest‑rated young managers, though doubts remain about his ability to coach in the Premier League.

McKenna left Ipswich to spend more time with his family and the distance from his Suffolk home to Tyneside adds another hurdle for a potential appointment.

Cesc Fabregas, the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder, led his Como side to Champions League qualification last season and is also a shareholder in the Serie A club.

Fabregas has expressed a desire to manage in the Premier League; his possession‑based, high‑pressing approach mirrors Eddie Howe’s style and he employs a 4‑2‑3‑1, matching Newcastle’s current system.

He has made 350 Premier League appearances, exactly 350 more than Jaissle, giving him extensive league knowledge that could benefit the Magpies.

Newcastle’s board now face a crucial decision, weighing the experience of Deschamps, the modern tactics of Nagelsmann, the youthful promise of McKenna, and the league familiarity of Fabregas as they search for a successor.
