Neuer’s final chapter at Bayern hinges on family and fun

Manuel Neuer, 40, is set to begin what he hints will be his very last campaign as a professional footballer with Bayern München, despite 85 percent of him wanting to quit earlier. Neuer swapped his car for a bicycle, towing a bike trailer that carries his son Luca. His wife and son, who live in nearby Rottach‑Egern, recently visited the training ground, where Luca proudly wore a shirt with the number 1 on the back.

The goalkeeper admits his family time has been scarce. After years of competing on three fronts with Bayern and a swift World Cup stint in the United States, a brief holiday was followed by the relentless start of another season.

At 40, the physical and mental demands weigh heavily. Neuer confessed, “85 percent of me wanted to stop, but this team, the staff and the coaches convinced me. It’s just too fun.” He adds that the prospect of more family moments was a key factor.

Trainer Vincent Kompany praised Neuer, saying, “‘Manu’ made it easier for me at the start. He can set order with a single sentence, his role in the dressing‑room is as important as on the pitch, he trains a lot and remains incredibly agile. It’s a delight to work with him.”

Neuer hints retirement as he eyes final Bayern season

Neuer himself emphasized the club’s ambition: “We can always compete for every trophy. We belong to the absolute top. This team and this club are the 15 percent that convinced me to stay. I do this for myself, knowing I can still help the team, and I have the support of my family and friends.”

Entering his 21st professional season, Neuer acknowledges few will follow his path. He insists he does not play with the thought “this is my last match,” even if it may be his final appearance in a particular stadium, and it looks likely he will retire after the campaign.
