Nations League night: Netherlands seeks a repeat against Greece

Tomorrow evening, the Oranje will play an away Nations League match against Greece. It will be the twelfth time the two nations meet. The match offers a new chapter in a series of five previous duels.

The last meeting took place on 16 October 2023, a Euro qualification match in Athens. In injury time, Virgil van Dijk scored from the penalty spot the only goal, delivering a 1‑0 win.

In a training friendly in Eindhoven in 2016, the Oranje took an early lead thanks to Georginio Wijnaldum. Konstantinos Mitroglou equalised in the 29th minute and Giannis Gianniotas settled the result a quarter of an hour before the end with 1‑2.

In 2004 the two teams met again in a friendly match on Dutch soil. After a goalless first half, Roy Makaay, Boudewijn Zenden, John Heitinga and Pierre van Hooijdonk took their turn for a 4‑0 win.

The earliest meeting dates back to 4 December 1991, a Euro qualification match in Greece. Dennis Bergkamp opened the scoring in the fortieth minute, and Danny Blind provided the decisive 0‑2 just before the end.
