Nations League: Ireland goalkeeper Bazunu boycotts Israel matches

Gavin Bazunu, wearing the Bolton Wanderers shirt, has announced that he will not play against Israel – a move that is causing a stir in the Irish national team. The 22‑cap international explained on Instagram that his personal faith prevents him from taking part in the matches.

Decision of the Irish Association

Irish association president David Courell confirmed after a 90‑minute team meeting that the disputed Nations League matches between Ireland and Israel will go ahead as planned. He emphasized that a clear majority had voted for the continuation.

Reactions in the Team

While Bazunu explained his decision, other players also voiced concerns. Jason Knight, who was already the first player to protest against the Sunday match, said after a 0‑1 defeat to Kosovo that he considered the game unfeasible, even though it would take place.

Ireland decides Nations League duel with Israel despite boycott

Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson had already explained the previous week that some of his players feel uncomfortable having to play the matches. His remark that Ireland does not play with genocide but against genocide was later called “stupid” by him himself.

The Israeli association responded sharply on social media and criticised Hallgrimsson for “stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy”. The debate reflects the broader political tension that has existed in Ireland since the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.

After a vote, Ireland confirms Nations League fixtures against Israel

The first match will take place on Sunday at 20:45 in Debrecen, Hungary, with the return leg scheduled for October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The Irish association FAI had already given up its ticket allocation in order to meet the calls for a boycott.
