Napoli slams Schalke over collapsed Lindström deal
SSC Napoli announced on 3 August 2026 at 23:06 that the planned transfer of Danish international Jesper Lindström to Bundesliga club Schalke 04 collapsed, accusing the German side of breaching the agreement. The club said the deal fell through after Schalke withdrew its interest.
Napoli issued a detailed clarification on its official website, describing the sequence of events and reserving all legal steps and options to protect its interests. The statement was presented as a response to what Napoli called inaccurate media reports.
According to Napoli, Schalke informed the Italian club on Monday at 13:00 that several of the proposed contractual conditions were unacceptable. The German side cited new sporting and tactical requirements as the reason for its stance.
Napoli explained that the new requirements stemmed from injuries to two key players over the weekend – left‑back Robin Gosens and central midfielder Dejan Ljubicic – which forced Schalke to adjust its transfer strategy.
The Italian club said it replied 22 minutes after the alleged refusal, confirming that it was ready to accept the revised contract version for Lindström.
Four hours later Schalke announced that, because of new priorities in squad planning, it no longer had any interest in signing the winger. The club’s change of position was presented as a shift in its roster strategy.
Napoli concluded that the true reasons for the failed transfer had become clear, and it referenced earlier media suggested Napoli had not honoured prior agreements. The dispute involved a loan contract in which Napoli wanted to embed a purchase obligation for Lindström, whereas earlier discussions had mentioned only an option.
The fallout leaves Lindström without a move, while Napoli threatens possible legal action and maintains its stance, and Schalke faces criticism from the Italian club for the collapsed deal.
