Napoli sinks in Europe while Doumbia evades a transfer blow
Napoli is experiencing a European crisis, with four defeats in eight games and a second knockout in the Champions League, while the summer has brought only complaints about the failure to sign Issa Doumbia, a 2003-born midfielder considered a possible solution.
The failure in the Champions League
On October 14, Napoli was defeated at Villarreal's ground, where a goal by Rrahmani opened the scoring. An error by Politano allowed the 1‑1, but the team failed to respond, then conceding the goals for 2‑1 and 3‑1. Coach Allegri called it "a disgrace to know how to defend" in Italy.
Allegri highlighted that Napoli concedes on average one goal per game in the league and two in the Champions League. Nevertheless, the three centre‑backs Rafa Marín, Rrahmani and Badiashile were not among the worst defenders.
Midfield in crisis and the loss of Doumbia
The weight of the midfield was evident: McTominay, De Bruyne, Anguissa and Lobotka have an average age well above 30 (twenty‑nine, 30, 31 and 35). Two contracts are expiring, two run until 2028, but freshness is lacking.
Issa Doumbia, who moved this summer from Venezia to Portugal's Sporting Club, had shown an excellent debut for the national team and his first Champions League goal. Sporting sold him for €20 million plus bonuses, but now rejects offers of €50 million for January, aiming for an €80 million clause.
Doumbia could have replaced Anguissa, adding vigor to the midfield. His price was considered affordable, but Napoli did not seize the opportunity, leaving the department to struggle with older players.
In summary, Napoli must face a difficult season in Europe, while the failure to acquire Doumbia highlights a transfer management that missed a renewal opportunity.
