Mourinho's hair‑raising return – Alberto analyses the Rome duel

José Mourinho returns with Real Madrid to his former haunt as the Spanish Royals meet AS Roma in Rome on Wednesday in a Champions League duel. The return triggers a feeling of injustice among the "Royals", as they already feel disadvantaged in the away match.

Historical Context and Hat-trick

Between 2021 and 2024, Mourinho was on the sidelines of AS Roma and completed the European hat-trick there: triumph in the Champions League, Europa League and in 2022 in the Conference League. Since this summer he is back in charge at Real Madrid.

At Real the title is, as expected, placed two divisions higher, but the calm before the match has not yet arrived.

Vinicius Incident and Possible Suspensions

Last weekend Vinicius Junior caused a stir when he scored against Villarreal, celebrated and kissed the crest, before a VAR disallowed the goal due to a hair scratch from Nathan Saliba. The Brazilian pulled the opponent's hair, which led to a red card, and he was held back by Antonio Rüdiger.

Mourinho refuses to comment on Villarreal refereeing, warns early minutes are enough

Vinicius faces at least two suspensions in LaLiga, but the possible ban does not affect his Champions League participation. The player posted a photo montage with eight scenes in which he was allegedly wrongly punished, and criticised the referees.

Coach José Mourinho showed indirect support by skipping the press conference and stating that he wants to be present against Sevilla and Barça if Vinicius is absent.

Alberto Gardin commented on the events and emphasized that Mourinho can still count on the duel against AS Roma despite the uproar over Vinicius. He pointed out that the upcoming match at 20:00 will be broadcast live on SRF 2, followed by the highlights programmes.
