Napoli's early surge meets Roma's late comeback in Europa

While Napoli raced to a two‑goal lead inside the first half, Roma fought back to force a dramatic 3‑3 draw, turning the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona into one of the most intense venues of the Europa matchday in Serie A's eighth round.

The clash proved one of the most intense fixtures of the Europa matchday, with six goals and constant swings in momentum that kept both sets of supporters on edge, offering Futbol fans a roller‑coaster of emotions.

Early fireworks

The opening strike arrived in the 28th minute when Cameroonian midfielder Frank Zambo Anguissa turned a set‑piece into a spectacular bicycle kick that found the back of the net, giving SSC Napoli the lead. The home crowd erupted as the ball rippled the net, marking the first goal of the match. It set the tone for a high‑octane encounter at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Napoli doubled their advantage in the 48th minute. Matteo Politano delivered a low cross from the right flank which Scottish forward Scott McTominay met with a powerful header, beating goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini and making it 2‑0. The goal reinforced the hosts' dominance and appeared to steer the contest towards a comfortable victory.

Late drama decides draw

Roma began their comeback in the 69th minute when Matías Soulé unleashed a right‑footed shot from outside the area after linking up with Donyell Malen, beating goalkeeper Alex Meret to halve the deficit. The Argentine’s strike revived the visitors' hopes and sparked a surge in pressure. It marked the first goal for ROM in the second half.

Just five minutes later, Leonardo Balerdi rose to meet a loose ball inside the box, heading it into the net to level the score at 2‑2. The Italian defender’s effort demonstrated Roma’s growing confidence. The equaliser intensified the battle for supremacy.

Napoli reclaimed the lead in the 83rd minute when Scott McTominay found space three‑quarters of the way up the pitch and unleashed a long‑range right‑footed shot that curled past Meret. The strike restored the home side’s advantage and seemed to settle the contest once more. It highlighted McTominay’s decisive impact on the game.

The final twist came in the 89th minute as Wesley sent a low cross from the right, allowing Leonardo Balerdi to rise again and head the ball home for a second time, sealing a 3‑3 finish. The double headed by Balerdi ensured the visitors walked away with a point. The late equaliser epitomised the match’s relentless back‑and‑forth nature.

The encounter underscored the unpredictable character of Serie A, leaving both Napoli and Roma supporters with mixed feelings after a spectacular display that will be remembered as one of the most intense Europa fixtures of the season.
