Gattuso warns Lazio’s Serie A lead is fragile as Inter await Fiorentina on Sunday

SS Lazio moved to the top of the Serie A table after a 2‑1 win over Parma, but head coach Gennaro Gattuso cautioned that “we frankly don’t really belong up there”, insisting the Biancocelesti must stay grounded despite their solitary position ahead of Inter’s Sunday clash with Fiorentina.

Christos Mandas kept Parma at bay with three big saves on dangerous counter‑attacks, while Kenneth Taylor seized the opening chance after a Reda Belahyane pass ricocheted off Diego Carlos and the defender inadvertently turned Nuno Tavares’s cross into his own net. Simone Lontani’s late cross flicked in off the far post in added time to seal the 2‑1 result.

Gattuso on the team’s mentality

“I appreciated the mentality of the team. We were a bit worried with their counter‑attacks in the first half and naïve at times, but then we raised the tempo and took control,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia. He added that the way the squad trains and approaches matches has improved over the last couple of games, and that they have not taken their foot off the gas as they did against Milan and Monza.

Top of Serie A and upcoming rivals

This start marks the best ever for Lazio, with seven victories and a 2‑2 draw against Milan. With Roma held 3‑3 by Napoli earlier, Lazio sit four points clear of their city rivals in third place. For at least one night they remain alone at the summit, waiting for Inter’s match against Fiorentina on Sunday.

Off‑field issues and squad management

The club’s ultras continue to protest President Claudio Lotito’s leadership, refusing to enter the Stadio Olimpico for months. Gattuso said the lack of European commitments is a benefit, allowing intense training followed by full‑day rest – “in the last three months we’ve given 20 days off to the players”. He also explained the decision to exclude Luca Pellegrini, who will become a free agent in a few months, and the sale of Patric, noting that squad harmony dictated the moves.
