Mourinho's World Cup break gives Strasbourg a glimpse of Real's Ortega

🇪🇸 By 4AllFootball ·

While Real Madrid’s senior squad enjoys an extended break to prepare for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Real Madrid’s Jacobo Ortega, a 20‑year‑old forward, has been invited to join Jose Mourinho’s pre‑season training camp, and French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg have publicly declared their interest in signing the Castilla star.

With most of the first‑team away, Mourinho, the Portuguese coach appointed earlier this year, turned his attention to the younger ranks, allowing players such as Ortega to train alongside the senior group. He sees the break as an opportunity to scout potential replacements for the attacking line.

The World Cup hiatus gives Mourinho a rare window to evaluate academy talent and consider future options for the squad. He sees the break as an opportunity to scout potential replacements for the attacking line.

Ortega impressed observers last season, becoming a regular starter for Real Madrid Castilla at just 20 and showcasing a well‑rounded skill set that made him a complete forward. His goal‑scoring abilities were highlighted throughout the campaign.

Strasbourg, a French Ligue 1 club, have set their sights on the young forward, reporting that they are keen to bring him to France to continue his development. Reports suggest the club views him as a long‑term investment for their front line.

Breaking into Real Madrid’s attack, however, will be difficult with established stars Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior ahead in the pecking order, the latter still linked with Arsenal amid contract complications. Vinícius’s contract issues add further uncertainty to his future at the club.

The club has also reinforced the front line with the imminent arrival of Yan Diomande in a deal reportedly exceeding €100 million, the return of Endrick from a successful loan at Lyon, and the retention of Gonzalo García as a valuable home‑grown player under UEFA registration rules. These home‑grown players are crucial for meeting UEFA squad composition requirements.

Given the depth of talent, a temporary move away, possibly to Strasbourg, could provide Ortega with regular senior football and aid his progression. Such a loan could also give Real Madrid a chance to monitor his development closely.
