Motta’s €4m salary demand blocks path to replace Fonseca at Lyon

Why Olympique Lyonnais, perched third in Ligue 1 and on course for a Europa League second‑round spot, now confront the imminent departure of manager Paulo Fonseca to Sporting CP? The Portuguese coach’s exit threatens to disrupt a season that has so far run smoothly on the sporting front.
Les Gones (the Kids) are already hunting a replacement, with Carlos Vicens emerging as the front‑runner. The name of former Juventus midfielder Thiago Motta has also been floated as a possible candidate.
Motta, who featured for Paris Saint‑Germain between 2012 and 2018, has been without a club since leaving Juventus in March 2025. He has received several offers in recent months, none of which have matched his expectations.
Negotiations have stalled mainly because his salary demand of roughly €4m a year is seen as a financial hurdle. In addition, Motta insists on bringing his own coaching staff to any project he undertakes.
At 44, Motta says his priority remains a Serie A role, although a return to France would interest him. Napoli have been linked as a possible destination should they dismiss Massimiliano Allegri.
Fonseca’s move to Sporting CP, the club of his heart, follows the Portuguese side’s recent parting with Rui Borges. The sudden change adds further uncertainty to Lyon’s managerial search.
