Motherwell’s three‑year gamble on MLS defender Girdwood‑Reich
Motherwell have secured 22‑year‑old centre‑back Jake Girdwood‑Reich from MLS side St Louis City on a three‑year contract. The Australian defender arrives with 23 senior MLS appearances and a loan spell in the A‑League, adding both experience and youth to the Scottish Premiership club.
It marks Motherwell’s fourth summer signing under head coach Alfred Johansson. Johansson has been rebuilding the squad ahead of the new season, targeting defensive solidity.
Girdwood‑Reich began his footballing journey in Sydney, where he first played organised football. He later spent a brief period in the academy of St Johnstone, gaining valuable experience in Scotland.
He joined MLS side St Louis City in 2024 and made 23 senior appearances for the American club. The previous season he returned to Australia on loan with Auckland FC, adding further A‑League experience.
Speaking to club media, Jake Girdwood‑Reich said, “It feels so good to be here.” He added, “Talks have been ongoing, and I've been keen to get things finalised so I could get to work. The manager was impressive in the way he explained how he wants the team to play, and that is something important to me.”
Head coach Alfred Johansson praised the signing, stating, “Jake has a perfect blend of experience and young, raw talent.” He continued, “At 22, he is young, enthusiastic and energetic. Defensively, he is a strong and intelligent player whose traits match our style.”
The three‑year deal strengthens Motherwell’s defensive options as the club reshapes its squad ahead of the new season. Girdwood‑Reich’s combination of MLS exposure and Australian loan experience offers a versatile addition to the Scottish Premiership side.
