Monaco weigh early exit for World Cup star Pogba as talks intensify

France midfielder Paul Pogba is expected to leave AS Monaco as talks progress on an early contract termination. The former World Cup winner joined the Ligue 1 side in June 2025, has made six appearances, and his two‑year deal was due to run until the end of the forthcoming season.

Two‑year deal set to end

Pogba signed the two‑year contract after being cleared to return to professional football following his doping suspension. The agreement was scheduled to expire at the close of the next campaign. A source told the BBC that Monaco are now negotiating an early exit, with a decision expected soon.

Limited game time since June

Since his arrival, Pogba has featured in only six matches, according to a Getty Images, ImagesImage caption that records his game count. His debut season was marred by injury, curtailing his ability to establish a regular role. The club hoped the current season would provide more playing time, but the numbers remain low.

Monaco recently appointed Filipe Luis as head coach, replacing Sebastien Pocognoli. The new manager may prefer a different profile in central midfield, potentially sidelining Pogba. This tactical shift adds pressure to resolve the midfielder’s contract situation.

Pogba was provisionally banned for four years after a positive test for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in February 2024, following an August 2023 doping test. He maintained the substance entered his system via an unknowingly contaminated supplement. The Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the sanction to 18 months, allowing his return to football in March 2025.

Monaco have not issued an official comment on the termination talks. The club’s silence leaves the exact terms of any separation unclear. Both parties appear to be moving toward a swift resolution.

If the contract is ended early, Pogba will become a free agent ahead of the next transfer window, opening possibilities for a new club. However, his limited recent playing time and the lingering stigma of the doping case may affect potential suitors.
