Monaco's European gamble: Filipe Luis tasked with reviving fortunes
AS Monaco have appointed Brazilian coach Filipe Luis as their new manager, signing him to an X‑year contract confirmed on Wednesday, as the club seeks to rebound after a seventh‑place Ligue 1 finish that left them outside the UEFA Champions League and destined for the Europa Conference League next season.
The Principality side finished seventh in Ligue 1, missing the coveted Champions League spots and confirming a drop to the UEFA Europa Conference League for the upcoming campaign. Club officials therefore turned to a fresh tactical vision to close the gap left by the previous regime.
Filipe Luis succeeds Sébastien Pocognoli, who took over from Adi Hutter in October 2025. Pocognoli, the Belgian former defender, inherited a squad already in transition.
During his short tenure, Pocognoli could only guide Monaco to a seventh‑place finish, falling short of the club’s objective to qualify for the Champions League. The result prompted the board to seek a manager with a proven track record in continental competition.
Luis arrives with a strong résumé, having been highly rated across Europe after steering Flamengo to the Copa Libertadores crown in the 2024‑25 season. His success in South America raised his profile among European clubs.
The Brazilian former defender, who also played for Atlético Madrid and Chelsea, left Flamengo in September 2025 after overseeing 100 games in charge. His departure marked the end of a prolific spell that included the continental triumph.
The Monaco appointment marks Luis’s first managerial experience in Europe, offering him a new challenge beyond the Brazilian league. He will need to adapt his style to the tactical demands of Ligue 1 and European competition.
Monaco will rely on Luis to navigate the Europa Conference League campaign and to rebuild a squad capable of returning to Champions League contention. Potential obstacles include integrating his philosophy with existing players and competing against clubs with larger budgets.
Luke Entwistle reported the appointment, confirming the X‑year deal and the club’s strategic shift.
