Modric backs Ronaldo as Portugal clash deepens with Jesus
Luka Modric has publicly defended Cristiano Ronaldo, who is locked in a dispute with the Portugal national team and head coach Jorge Jesus. On Tuesday the forward accused Jesus of breaking promises about his playing time in the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League. The clash has divided opinions across European football.
Modric defends Ronaldo
Modric, the former Real Madrid midfielder, stepped in to champion his ex‑club teammate, saying the Portuguese star deserves a proper farewell. “Cristiano is the greatest player in the history of Portugal, and he deserves another farewell and another ending with the national team,” he told Fabrizio Romano.
He added, “It’s sad to see this happening to Cristiano in his own country. Still, I think they will find a solution, because Cris deserves, whether he retires or decides not to continue with the national team, to have a great farewell that reflects what he deserves.” Modric’s comments underline his loyalty to the former Real Madrid colleague.
Ronaldo’s accusations and possible fallout
In the Tuesday statement, Ronaldo claimed Jorge Jesus failed to keep several promises regarding his role and minutes on the pitch for the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign. He described the promises as unfulfilled and suggested the coach’s assurances were misleading.

Since Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the national team camp, rumours have swirled about his international future, including proposals for a ceremonial farewell match so fans can see their captain one last time with the squad.
Ronaldo and Jesus clash: CR7's letter remains unanswered
The next international break begins on November 9. Ronaldo could face a federation suspension by then for walking out of camp, although the Portuguese Football Federation and FIFA have yet to decide on any disciplinary action. Jesus previously maintained that the striker remains eligible for selection, but the recent comments may alter that dynamic.
