Milan-Benfica Amorim: Ramos challenges the past, Modric on the bench
Milan is preparing for its Europa League debut against Benfica on a European eve at Milanello, where on Tuesday manager Ruben Amorim oversaw a calm training session, joking with the squad but keeping concentration high. Ramos and Modric are in the spotlight.
Amorim's European objectives
Amorim immediately, during the press conference, outlined the ambitions of the Rossoneri in Europe. “We are in the competition and we are here to win,” said the Portuguese manager, emphasizing the goal of winning the trophy.
Luka Modric, a starter last season, risks being left on the bench for the match against Benfica. The former United player was omitted at halftime of the game against Lazio, and Amorim explained that his role depends on ball possession. “To make Luka feel comfortable in the game, we need to have long periods of ball possession,” he added.
Diego Moreira, the hero of the decisive brace at the Olimpico, was mentioned by Amorim as an example of a young talent on the rise. The coach recalled that “It is impossible to think of winning competitions relying only on 11 or 14 players,” highlighting the importance of a deep squad. Christian Pulisic also remains in contention for the starting lineup.

Ramos recalls his roots
Goncalo Ramos, expected to be a key figure against his former club, expressed an emotional bond with Benfica. “Benfica is my home, so to speak. I have spent more time at Benfica than at my family’s home,” he said, adding that he will not gloat in case of a goal against the Encarnados.
Ramos also reiterated that a striker’s worth is not measured solely by goals. “The most important thing is always the team’s victory,” he stated, adding that “We are building understanding and automatisms” with his teammates.

Benfica represents the first real European testing ground for Amorim’s Milan, who wants to turn the positive signals from the Olimpico into a convincing performance in front of their own fans. For the upcoming match, the team will focus on possession, tactical discipline and group cohesion.
