Messi skips Ballon d'Or for Messi Cup match
Eight‑time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi skipped the high‑profile ceremony in Londres, opting instead to watch Boca Juniors take on Cornellà in the Messi Cup. The Argentine star’s absence from the gala and his presence at the youth showcase drew immediate attention.
While Futbol’s biggest names converged in Londres for the Balón de Oro gala, the eight‑time winner chose a different route. Messi, who has collected the award more than any other player, remained close to the sport’s emerging generation, reinforcing his legendary status. The ceremony, held in Londres, is where the winner of the Balón de Oro is decided each year.
The Inter Miami captain attended the second‑edition Messi Cup fixture, where Boca Juniors faced Spanish side Cornellà. His presence turned the friendly into a spotlight event for the under‑16 squads, underscoring the tournament’s growing profile. The match was staged in the United States as part of the competition’s American leg.
By forgoing the prestigious ceremony, Messi became the most notable absentee of the Balón de Oro 2026 event. The champion’s involvement placed the youth competition at the centre of global football conversation, linking the event directly to his legacy and the development of tomorrow’s stars. Fans and media praised the gesture, noting it aligns with Messi’s long‑term vision for the sport.
