Messi's Princesa of Asturias award in Spain underlines his legacy

Lionel Messi, the 39‑year‑old Argentine (Argentino) striker who now plays for Inter Miami, was the centrepiece of an international ceremony on Friday 23 October in Spain (Espanha), where he received the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports from Princess Leonor, the heir to the Spanish throne.

Ceremony in Oviedo

The ceremony was held at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, bringing together members of the Spanish royal family and guests from a range of countries. Messi arrived with his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and was greeted with an ovation from the assembled audience. The Princess (Princesa) of Asturias Awards are among Spain’s most prestigious honours, recognising individuals who excel in diverse fields.

The 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports (Prêmio Princesa de Astúrias dos Esportes) was presented by Princess Leonor, the heir to the Spanish throne. The prize package includes a Joan Miró sculpture, a diploma, an insignia and a cash component of 50 000 euros. The recipient was announced on 3 June by the Princess of Asturias Foundation (Asturias (Ast)).

Career and social impact

Messi’s football résumé features eight Ballon d’Or trophies, four Champions League titles and the 2022 World Cup triumph with Argentina in Qatar. His eight Ballon d’Or trophies underline his status as the most decorated player in history. Off the pitch, the Leo Messi Foundation supports education and health projects for children and adolescents. The award therefore acknowledges both his on‑field brilliance and his charitable contributions.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) noted that Messi is the first footballer to receive the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports individually. In 2012 the same honour was shared jointly by goalkeeper Iker Casillas and midfielder Xavi Hernández. Gávea News reported the AFA statement.

“I am very happy, very moved to receive this award, which goes beyond sport,” Messi said, adding that he knows its meaning because he lived in Spain for more than 20 years. The comment was released in translation by Inter Miami. He underscored his long‑standing link with the country where he spent over two decades playing for Barcelona.
