Mbappé apologizes after two Chinese sponsors end deal

Tuesday, two major Chinese companies, Dongpeng and Mengniu, announced the termination of their partnership with Real Madrid footballer Kylian Mbappé after a video was released in which he appears to joke about Mao Zedong. The player posted the same day sincere apologies in French, English and Mandarin.

Termination of Chinese partnerships

Dongpeng and Mengniu, two giants of the Chinese food industry, said on Tuesday they are ending all commercial agreements with Mbappé. The decision follows the release of a video deemed offensive.

In the online clip, the Real Madrid footballer appears to joke about Mao Zedong, former historic leader of China. The footage quickly spread, triggering a backlash.

Player's apologies

That same Tuesday, Kylian Mbappé issued a statement in French, English and Mandarin, saying he was “deeply sorry”. He acknowledged that his remarks were clumsy and offered his apologies to everyone who was offended.

These apologies were sent to AFP and relayed by the Agency, which highlighted the cancellation of advertising contracts in China. The player stressed his profound respect for the Chinese people and their history.

The football and sports sector is watching this controversy, which shows the sensitivity of brands to public statements. Two major companies have therefore terminated their partnerships, reminding of the importance of careful communication.

The contrast between the sponsors' termination and the player's apologies illustrates how quickly a controversy can affect commercial relationships and an athlete's image.
