Matos must restore order after QPR thrashing at Loftus Road

Swansea City endured a 5-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, the heaviest loss of Vitor Matos' 11‑month tenure and a stark reminder of the club’s defensive fragility.
Defensive woes and historic comparison
Eight of the 13 goals the Swans have let in this league campaign have arrived in just two fixtures – at Southampton and at QPR – according to the Huw Evans Picture Agency. Before the QPR onslaught, Swansea had conceded only eight goals in their first 11 league matches.
The last time the club suffered a larger margin was in April 2002, when Nick Cusack’s inaugural game in charge ended in a 7-1 loss to Hartlepool United in the fourth tier.
Saturday’s thrashing eclipsed the 3-0 defeats to Ipswich Town and Coventry City recorded last season, making it the most severe setback under Matos.
Queens Park Rangers struck within two minutes and piled on four goals before the half‑hour mark, leaving Swansea scrambling for any foothold.
Reactions and road ahead
Julien Stephan, the Rangers boss, praised his side’s display, saying, "You play the leaders, you win 5-0 and you deliver this performance. It’s a very rare moment, not only the season but in a career," and added that his team had been "close to perfection".
Vitor Matos, apologising to supporters, admitted, "We all feel the responsibility. We were not at our standards and we need to do much more. It starts with me," acknowledging the depth of the squad but lamenting the defensive lapses.
Swans manager Kone added a quickfire hat‑trick to seal the rout, while the club’s earlier loss to West Ham United a week before compounded a chaotic week.
Swansea lost only once in their first ten league games but have now been beaten twice in succession. Despite the setbacks, they remain in the automatic promotion places, with a home clash against Blackburn Rovers looming.
Even if they falter again against Blackburn, the season’s start would still be viewed positively, yet Matos will be desperate to restore order before the next weekend.
