Marseille’s Nnadi plays on with torn meniscus, sparking admiration

On the 30 August away trip to Monaco, 23‑year‑old Nigerian midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi limped back onto the pitch after a right‑knee knock, refusing to leave despite a pain that grew with each tackle. He managed only a few minutes before the medical team finally intervened.

The Nigerian midfielder eventually had to abandon the game after several examinations confirmed a torn meniscus. He later underwent surgery to repair the damage. The injury occurred early in the second half, forcing the team to reshuffle its midfield.

Son unavailability could have been much longer. Yet Nnadi was back on the training ground in under five weeks, featuring in the friendly against Montpellier.

Rapid recovery impresses Marseille

His swift return surprised many, especially given the typical recovery period for such injuries. Marseille manager Bruno Genesio now hopes the 23‑year‑old can gradually restore his full physical capabilities.

Genesio values Nnadi’s profile, saying the player adds a missing element to his midfield. The Nigerian international possesses the speed, power and ball‑winning instinct that the coach has been seeking. His ability to win duels has already been highlighted in training sessions.

Coach Chelle praises his tenacity

Nigeria’s national team manager Éric Chelle described Nnadi as “fast, powerful and capable of retrieving many balls from opponents’ feet.” He added that Nnadi’s aggressive approach can sometimes be excessive and must be better controlled.

Signed from Zulte‑Waregem for roughly €6 million, Nnadi admits he does not aim to emulate Marco Verratti’s technique. He prefers a simple, aggressive style focused on ball recovery, a trait that has already earned him praise for his “grit and determination.”

Genesio has already trialled a Nnadi‑Kamissoko partnership in midfield during the Montpellier friendly, indicating the Nigerian could become a regular option. Whether the new “warrior” can translate his courage into lasting influence remains to be seen.
