Marseille have confirmed that 28‑year‑old centre‑back Derek Cornelius will miss roughly three months after sustaining a hip injury while on international duty with Canada, according to a report from L’Équipe. The injury was diagnosed as a non‑contact lower‑body problem during a training session in Toronto.

During Wednesday’s training in Toronto the defender suffered the setback and was taken to a local hospital. Canada manager Jesse Marsch said he feared the worst for the centre‑back.

Marseille issued a statement on Saturday saying the player’s unavailability was “envisaged” for a significant period, without providing further details.

L’Équipe understands that surgery will not be required, but that Cornelius is unlikely to feature again in 2027 and that an absence of around three months is expected.

The 28‑year‑old returned to Marseille over the summer after a loan spell at Rangers, but has been used sparingly, logging only 26 minutes in Ligue 1 and a further 67 minutes in the UEFA Europa League.

His start against Besiktas in the Europa League suggested he could serve as a rotation option in what is a threadbare OM squad.

The injury therefore represents a further blow for manager Bruno Genesio, reducing depth in a defensive line already stretched.
