Maresca’s first City tests: Inter and Atletico loom in Asia warm-up

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca will take charge of his first competitive fixtures when his side face Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid in pre-season Asia. City’s tour begins in Hong Kong on Saturday 1 August against Inter Milan, the first time since 2015 that someone other than Pep Guardiola has led the Blues in a pre-season friendly. Maresca’s first three games in charge will all be broadcast live on CITY+ as the club enters a new era following his appointment last week.

The opening fixture against Inter Milan kicks off at 12:30 UK time, with the squad then traveling to Seoul for two further matches. On Wednesday 5 August, City will face the K-League All-Stars XI at 13:00 UK, before a Sunday 9 August clash against Atletico Madrid at the same time. All three pre-season games are part of preparations for the upcoming season, with Maresca yet to name his preferred tactical system or starting lineup.

Fans are expected to scrutinise every detail of the three matches for early indications of Maresca’s approach after the Pep Guardiola era. The Italian’s first season in charge faces added complexity due to staggered player returns from international duty at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will complicate pre-season preparations.

City’s pre-season schedule culminates on 16 August at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, where they will face Premier League champions Arsenal in the FA Community Shield. This will be the Blues’ eighth appearance in the competition, though their most recent triumph came over a decade ago.

The Community Shield outing provides fringe players and academy talents with a final opportunity to impress Maresca before the Premier League campaign begins the following weekend. With no competitive football until then, every minute of the Asia tour and Shield clash will carry extra significance for those battling for minutes.

Maresca’s first three games in charge will all be broadcast live on CITY+ in the UK and most foreign territories, marking a clear break from the Guardiola era in terms of media coverage as well as on-field leadership.

The Italian’s opening match against Inter Milan represents a homecoming of sorts, as the Hong Kong fixture pits him against his nation’s champions. His next opponents, the K-League All-Stars XI, will test City’s depth and adaptability in unfamiliar conditions.

Atletico Madrid, the final pre-season opponent, will provide a sterner tactical examination for Maresca’s side, with the Spanish club known for their disciplined defensive structure and physical approach.

With the Community Shield serving as the tour’s climax, Maresca’s early weeks in charge will be defined by squad selection dilemmas and tactical experimentation under intense scrutiny.
