Marco Silva restores hope at Benfica after Mourinho’s Madrid exit

Marco Silva has taken charge of Benfica, the only Portuguese title‑contender to replace its manager this season, after José Mourinho departed for Real Madrid and Silva’s Fulham contract ran out. The move instantly gave the Estádio da Luz a new narrative of hope.

Benfica’s decision to switch coaches was prompted by Mourinho’s exit, a change that unsettled a fanbase already dissatisfied with the Setúbal‑born boss’s under‑whelming 2025/26 performance. President Rui Costa and the club’s hierarchy insisted on a manager capable of winning over the demanding supporters, even though consensus at the Luz remains elusive.

Silva was drawn to the role by the chance to lead his boyhood club, and his availability was secured when his Fulham deal expired. Critics labelled the appointment a step back, noting his recent Premier League profile, yet his résumé includes a cup triumph with Sporting, a successful spell at Estoril Praia, and periods at Olympiacos, Hull City and Watford.

Heavy summer spending

Benfica invested more than €90 million in the summer market while recouping €128 million, chiefly through mandatory buy‑out clauses. The arrivals – Alessandro Circati, João Palhinha, Clément Lenglet, Jakub Kaminski, Souffian El Karouani, Claudio Echeverri and Jhon Durán – were chosen for immediate impact, with Gabriel Índio signed for the long term.

All newcomers are expected to feature heavily up to May 2027, reducing the club’s reliance on its famed academy. Mourinho’s previous tenure did showcase youngsters such as Daniel Banjaqui, José Neto and Anísio Cabral, while others like Gonçalo Moreira, Tiago Freitas, Miguel Figueiredo and João Fonseca must await injuries or cup fixtures.

Silva revives undervalued players

Silva has already rejuvenated several sidelined athletes: Dodi Lukebakio logged 13 games with two goals and two assists, and Enzo Barrenechea added an assist in 11 appearances. Gianluca Prestianni’s 15 games have yielded nine goals and five assists, Rafa Silva matched his earlier form with five goals and one assist in the same number of matches, and Claudio Echeverri contributed two assists in four outings.

The contrast between a high‑profile managerial overhaul and the meticulous rebuilding of the squad underscores the thin margin for error at Benfica. Silva’s early influence suggests the club can translate its financial muscle into on‑field success, but the ultimate test will be sustaining results in the league and the Europa League.
